This elegant LED-solar panel necklace by Swedish student designer Mae Yokoyama doesn’t really provide any function except adornment (and perhaps a dim nightlight at night), but we love this creative transformation of a purely utilitarian tech object (the humble solar panel) into a piece of stunning wearable art that will raise awareness about solar and LED technology.

Halted in November 2008, mid-construction, the Filene development in downtown Boston is currently barely even a shell of a building. The bones of the building are up, but sub street level a giant hole leaves a gouge in the city’s plan. Undaunted, Höweler + Yoon Architecture and Squared Design teamed up to design a vertical tower of prefabricated “eco pods” filled with bio-fuel producing algae for the space. The new tower would act as a center to test new algae species and different growing methods.

Eco Factor: Folding bike to ease carriage.
The ease that folding bikes present to the owner have started a race among industrial designers as to who can develop a bike that is the simplest and the fastest to fold and that too, in the smallest possible package. Sitting among the canopy of a jungle forest near Yelapa, Mexico, these V-Houses by Heinz Legler are quite possibly an eco-adventurer’s paradise. The treehouse-like structures are lofted 16 feet above the ground and open on all sides to offer panoramic views of the tropical surroundings. Although the rooms measure only 16 feet by 16 feet, a slanted ceiling and open walls make the treehouse seem larger — blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. And to top off this eco-dream of a jungle retreat, the V-Houses were designed with modular components, made with sustainable materials, and have incorporated solar panels, composting toilets, and a greywater system.

Eco Factor: Sustainable treehouses generate solar electricity.
Do treehouses always have to be constructed by nailing a room into place, thereby jeopardizing the life of the tree? Heinz Legler has a different thinking, the designers have unveiled their latest treehouses, dubbed V-Houses, which do offer the same adventure as a treehouse does but without actually constructing the house on a tree.
